Handwritten Letters | Gold and Navy Calligraphy

Handwritten letters are thebomb.com. You should see my face when I get calligraphy mail. I light up. I run straight to my door, drop everything and open it right away. I’m mostly excited because I get some of the most beautiful calligraphy mail. But if we’re being honest, I’m just as happy to open a letter that isn’t a bill. I send letters to friends or other calligraphers whenever I can because I know that other people share in the same joy. Letters from friends are just the best!

I always jump at any opportunity to participate in the Flourish Forum’s calligraphy exchanges. I’ve written letters for Halloween (2015 and 2016), Christmas (2015, 2016), “Bling Bling” Gold and Metallic themed, Valentine’s Day (2016, 2017), Nature themed, and maybe some others. Life’s been busy the past few months so I missed a few exchanges, but luckily, I was able to find time to create handwritten letters for the Precious Pets themed exchange this month.

I don’t have any pets of my own, so I claim my parents’ animals as my own. They are six hours away from me, but I just love them to pieces. I was never a dog person until my parents got Sadie, a yellow lab who forever changed my heart for dogs. She’s a sweet pea. She likes to hold hands (paws), loovveeesss going for walks (she gets all giddy when I ask her to go for a walk!), but most of all, she is CRAZY about her tennis balls.

We call her orange and blue balls (pictured above) her “piggies.” She used to have an actually pig toy that she would play fetch with (“Sadie! Go get piggy!”), until she tore him up. She got so used to us telling her to fetch “piggy” that it stuck, so now every ball is a piggy. Sometimes she carries two or three of them in her mouth. When she’s pooped from a busy day of people and play, she falls asleep with piggy in her mouth. She would literally chase piggy to the ends of the earth.

And that’s where I came up with this concept for precious pets. The post precious thing for my pet is a simple ball.

I addressed the navy envelopes in a flourished Copperplate calligraphy using Inca Gold Fintec (my new fav!) metallic ink. I used Dr. Ph Martin’s Bleedproof White ink to write the blacklettered phrase “I will chase you to the ends of the earth.” I added some gold flourishes to the letters–they almost resembled the sun’s corona (convenient that I finished these the day after the solar eclipse!). I created a few different types of flourishes for the tennis ball lines in Bleedproof White.

I used this adorable dog paper from Paper Source as envelope liners and cut out individual dogs to put on the back of the cards with a personalized note.

These little tennis earths are going to Florida, Massachusetts, Oklahoma, the UK and Canada. I sealed these shimmering handwritten letters with red wax and stamped them with a rooster stamp. Right now USPS has pet stamps which I tried to get, but the local post office was out of them. Here’s how I got to the rooster stamps:

Me: Do you have the pet stamps?
Post Office Lady: No, we’re out.
Me: Do you have any other animal stamps?
POL: I have sharks.
Me: What about the tigers? (Thinking, “hey, at least they’re fluffy!”)
POL: No tigers. Oh, but I have roosters!
Me: That’ll work.

Also, spilled candle and sealing wax all over my styling board. Worth it.
